William D. Massenburg “Flicka”

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving children, the Lord told His servant, “Job well done.” William Darnell Massenburg won his battle and peacefully went home to be with the Lord. Affectionately known as “Flicka,” William was born on March 25, 1956, in Sussex, Virginia, to the late Barbara Lee Pulliam and William Moore.

William joined the Historic Hunting Quarter Baptist Church in Sussex, Virginia, at an early age. He attended Sussex County Public Schools until he decided to enter the workforce at a young age. At the age of 18, William proudly became a United States Marine. His military career allowed him to travel overseas during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the United States and began a career as a heavy equipment operator, a profession he continued until his retirement in 2019.

There wasn’t a time you would see Flicka when he wasn’t sharp as a tack! He had a love for the finer things in life, especially fine clothing, jewelry, and vehicles. His appearance was always top-tier, even on his sickest days. And even his beloved Washington Commanders “Redskins” apparel had to be wrinkle-free—LOL!

William fought until he took his very last breath. He did everything on his terms, just as he lived his life.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Pulliam; daughter, Sara Winfield; granddaughters, Mariyah and Mari’yana Williams; and siblings, Gloria White, Rickey Pulliam, Janice Vaughn, Antonio Pulliam, Rick Johnson, Brenda Moore, and Troy Pulliam.

William leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted and loving children: Lamonte Hicks (Rechelle), Marquis Williams, Jalisa Kelley (Kejuan), and stepdaughter, Shemnia Ricks (Paris).

He also leaves five grandchildren: Markell Hendricks, Maliah Williams, Markell Williams, Sikara Jackson, and Catrell Winfield.

He leaves four brothers: Warnell Massenburg, Raymond Pulliam, James Pulliam, and Sam Moore (Stephanie); seven sisters: Sandra Johnson, Gloria Urquhart, Janice Taylor, Terri Wiggins, Tracy Jones, Priscilla Wiggins, and Erica Wiggins; one devoted sister-in-law, Paulette Pulliam; one uncle, Joseph Massenburg; devoted niece, Renika Starks; devoted cousin, Laura Reed-Byrd; devoted friends, Melvin Boone, Eddie Artis, Langston Artis, Marcellus Williams, Jean and Jimmy Jones; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

William’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His strength, personality, style, humor, and unwavering determination will never be forgotten. Though he may no longer be with us in body, the love and memories he left behind will remain forever.

Rest well, Flicka. Your work here is done. Job well done.
