William E.
Colbert, Sr. "Jim"
Jun 12, 1938 — Mar 16, 2026
William "Jim" Colbert passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, at the age of 87. He was born on June 12, 1938, in Southampton County, Virginia.
Jim was a true jack of all trades, but to many, he was best known as a skilled and dedicated mechanic. If something was broken, Jim believed he could fix it—and more often than not, he did. His hands were rarely still, and his work ethic spoke for itself.
He found joy in life's simple pleasures—drag racing, tractor pulls, fishing, and, most especially, good food. He had a deep appreciation for seafood and just about any cut of pork you could imagine. If it wasn't good, he simply wasn't eating it—and everyone around him knew it.
Jim's personality was one that left a lasting impression. He was hardworking, funny, and strong-willed, with a stubbornness that was uniquely his own. Yet, he was also warm and welcoming, never meeting a stranger and always ready to share a story that could capture the attention of anyone in the room.
Above all, Jim was a man of faith. He didn't just believe—he lived it. He was one of the founding members of the gospel music group, Gospel Harmoneers of Ivor, and was also the father of the group, Jesus Christ's Children (JCC's). His son, William "Jerry" Colbert, proudly continues that legacy as a member. Through music, Jim traveled and shared the word of God, touching the lives of many along the way.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sumedise Colbert; his children, William "Jerry" Colbert (Tamerio), Sylvia Colbert, William "Sonny Boy" Elliott (Alethea), Melissa Wyatt (Percy Sr.), Kotina Lawson (Lynn), Jimmie Ruffin, Trina Ruffin, Fay Harrison, Charles Lane, and Donte Lane; his siblings, Ruth "Baby Ruth" Moore, Ollie Mae West, Roosevelt Colbert (Tamara) and Milton Colbert; and a host of bonus children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gracie Twine and Euclis Colbert; his sons, Tommy Colbert and Keith Colbert; his grandson, Andre Harper; and his sisters, Barbara Colbert and Linda "Jane Baby" Colbert.
Jim's life was defined by his faith, his work, his love for family, and the joy he found in the everyday moments. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Services will be held 12 Noon, Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Gilfield Baptist Church, 9040 Doles Road, Ivor, VA, Overseer Angelo Scott, eulogist. The interment to follow at the church cemetery.
