Vivian M.
Edmonds
Jul 30, 1940 — May 16, 2026
The Quiet Architecture of a Life Well Lived
We, your children, wish we had more time to say all the words that now fill the quiet space you have left behind. But a love like yours, Mother, was never meant to fade; it roots itself in everything around us: in the morning light, in bread and prayer, in the way we hold our own children close and feel, somehow, that you are still with us. As God calls us home one by one, the chain will link again someday.
Vivian M. Edmonds Mother • Grandmother • Thinker • Passionate Listener • Advocate for Community Empowerment • Educator • Spiritual Leader and Change Agent
Vivian transitioned peacefully on May 16, 2026, at home, surrounded by her loving family after a valiant struggle with illness. Her indomitable spirit was a steady source of strength, encouraging family and friends alike to persevere in the face of life's obstacles and challenges. She was deeply committed to the people she held dear, ensuring those around her had the love and support to reach their highest potential and sustain their faith. She lived a rich, full, and beautiful life, and will be remembered for her vibrancy, curiosity, fearlessness, and enthusiasm for living; and for a legacy of love, service, faith, community development, and humor.
In conversation, Vivian had a rare and beautiful gift; she made you feel truly heard. No matter the topic or the weight of the moment, she would settle in and offer those two simple, reassuring words: "I'm listening."
And perhaps no single word better captures her spirit than the one she offered most freely and most firmly. Those who knew and loved her will forever hear her voice in that single, timeless instruction:
"Behave." Which was the lion inside her that roared.
Vivian did not merely profess her faith; she embodied it from the inside out. Her spiritual love for others was genuine, selfless, and unmistakable, a quiet but powerful force that drew people to her and pointed them toward something greater than themselves.
She will be forever known as Ma Viv or Mrs. Vivian ; a name that said everything. With an open-door policy and an even more open heart, she welcomed countless individuals into her home, claiming them as her own and folding them seamlessly into the fabric of her family.
Vivian was raised in a home where family was not just valued; it was everything. From her earliest years, the richness of her heritage and the warmth of those bonds shaped the woman she would become. She will be remembered as a woman of unwavering integrity, deep devotion, and boundless compassion.
Vivian was born to the late Sidney Bernard Mason and Mary Bell Mason on July 30, 1940, in Disputanta, Virginia. The ninth of twelve children, she was raised in a home overflowing with love, strong values, and an unshakeable faith. Faith was the true cornerstone of Vivian's life. Under the loving guidance of her parents, who instilled in her from her earliest days the importance of putting Christ first, she answered that call by joining Little Mount Baptist Church at a young age; a commitment that would anchor her for the rest of her days.
Vivian attended Waverly Training School and Disputanta High School in Disputanta, Virginia, where her exceptional intellect and tireless work ethic set her apart. Known among her peers and teachers alike as a high achiever, she approached every endeavor with determination and grace; qualities that would define her throughout her life.
She possessed a rich portfolio of personal and spiritual gifts, complemented by the depth of her own life experience and accomplishments.
Known for her exceptional work ethic and steadfast sense of responsibility, Vivian built a career that spanned Central State Hospital, Brown & Williamson Tobacco, and Philip Morris Tobacco Company. She later earned her certification as a professional healthcare provider and embraced her role as a homemaker with the same dedication she brought to everything she did. Her commitment to family and community development, particularly in the Ettrick and Matoaca area, left an enduring legacy that will long be felt by those she served.
As the years unfolded, Vivian's passion for service and faith deepened alongside her commitment to learning where she received a higher calling and organically pivoted. She became a devoted member of Emmanuel Worship Center, where she not only excelled but rose to become a cherished mentor; walking alongside both new and longtime members as they navigated their faith journeys and life's many seasons while developing their intellectual capabilities. Her dedication was recognized through a number of key senior positions she held within the organization. During this enriching chapter, she also pursued advanced studies, earning certificates of completion toward a degree in Hebrew Religious Studies through Simchat Torah Beit Midrash and International Center for Torah Studies; a testament to her lifelong hunger for knowledge and spiritual growth.
In addition to her parents, Vivian was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bernard Leroy Edmonds and her former husband, Howard David Burrow, the devoted father of her five children. The family also mourns the loss of her cherished daughter, Audrey Burrow Brown; three beloved sisters, Helen Mason, Georgia Gibbs, and Mary Evelyn Parham; and six dear brothers, Edward T. Mason, Horace B. Mason, James L. Mason, Frank L. Mason, Sidney Mason, Jr., and Roy A. Mason.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted children: daughter, Michelle Burrow of South Chesterfield, VA; three sons, Howard Reginald Burrow of Texas, Karl David Burrow of Tokyo, Japan, and Craig Wendell Burrow of Ettrick, VA; adopted son, Frank L. Mason of Ettrick, VA; two sisters, Ruth Gibbs (Louis) of Teaneck, NJ and Earlene Hope (Theron) of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters-in-law, Arzie Sutton Mason of Goldsboro North Carolina, Dorothy Mason of New York and Justine Jackson of Petersburg, VA; special daughter-in-law, Atsuko Tsuyuki Burrow Tokyo Japan.
Vivian leaves behind a legacy of love carried forward by her devoted grandchildren, Omar Burrow, Howard R. Burrow, Jr., Devin Goldsen, Elijah Burrow, Josh Burrow, Nanice Delores Burrow, Camille Vivian Burrow, Hannah Earlene Burrow, and Kikuno Eugenia Nishiyama; and a host of great grandchildren, relatives and friends.
She is also survived by a circle of devoted friends and cherished care assistants whose faithful presence brought her comfort and joy in her final days — Linda Darden, Karen Jones, Jackie Jones, and Charita Garrett.
Lastly, and with the deepest gratitude, it must be said that throughout Vivian's final years, the daily, devoted, and often rigorous care she received would not have been possible without the tireless love and sacrifice of her devoted daughter Michelle. Her unwavering presence was a gift beyond measure a living expression of the very values her mother spent a lifetime instilling.
The family also wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Amedisys, whose timely, professional, and compassionate hospice care services were a source of tremendous comfort and support during one of life's most tender seasons. Their constant presence and dedication to Vivian's care and the well-being of the entire family will never be forgotten.
Gone but never forgotten, Vivian M. Edmonds leaves behind a life that was itself an inspiration, blueprint for all, a testament to beauty, faith, and the extraordinary power of an ordinary day lived with purpose and love. Her absence will be deeply felt by all whose lives she graced.
A precious and priceless jewel.
