On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the ago 90, Ms. Sophia Jane Hines answered the call to Heaven by her Savior, while a patient in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA.

Ms. Sophia, was born on May 6, 1934 to the late Milan and Bessie Hines, in Rich Square, North Carolina. At an early age, she relocated to Boykins, VA to live with her grandparents. Later in life, she met her sweetheart, Charlie Vatil (Bubba) Cross. Out of this relationship, two sons were born.

Sophia enjoyed watching sports, cooking until her eyesight began to fail, and her Big Red gum. She joined Diamond Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board, mass choir, hospitality, and the Anointed Voices. During her life journey she also worked as a school bus driver, cook, and nurse assistance.

She was predeceased by her parents, Buddy Hines and Peter Hines and her sister, Margart Whitaker.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Charlie Bernard Cross (Endora) and James A. Cross both of Franklin, VA; two grandsons, Antonio Vincent of Fayetteville, NC, and Cedric Cross of Suffolk, VA; four great-grandchildren, Anissia Hunt, Mya'ah Vincent, Skyy Vincent, and Niyana Vincent; two sisters, Minnie Ward of Patterson, NJ and Mary Boyd (Charlie) of Newark, NJ; stepson, Herbert Scott (Estelle) of Portsmouth, VA, and several nieces, nephews, relatives too numerous to name. She will be missed by many.

Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, April 27, 2025, at GEMS Church, 30466 Riverdale Drive, Franklin, VA, Pastor Quinton Franklin, Pastor and Elder Cedric Cross, eulogist. The interment to follow at the City of Franklin Southview Cemetery.

Viewing for Mrs. Hines will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Saturday, April 26, 2025, at William M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 224 S. Main Street, Franklin, VA.
