Obituary

Shirley Mae Peete Cutchins, of 287 E. South Boulevard, Petersburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Bon Secour Southside Medical Center where she was surrounded by her devoted family.

A former resident of 716 Wilson Street in Petersburg and affectionately known as "Ba Bay", she was born on July 9, 1939, to the late Tucker and Catherine Williams. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Cutchins; sisters, Mildred A. Williams and Catherine Doris "Chew" Williams; brothers, Robert Lee Williams and Leroy Tucker Williams; sister-in-law, Rosa L. Williams; and her stepfather Elder Stanley S. Howell.

Shirley was a faithful member of the United House of Prayer for All People.  Christ was the center of her life, and she shared her love for the Lord with everyone she encountered.  She attended Peabody High School and completed courses in cosmetology.  Shirley was employed for a period of time as a laundry attendant in Monticello, New York.  She returned to Petersburg out of devotion to her family and later became a homemaker.

She found joy and fulfillment in taking care of her loved ones. Her home was a sanctuary for anyone who needed a place to live.  It was a home filled with laughter, you could get a home-cooked meal, and countless memories were created.  Shirley will forever be remembered for her unwavering love, boundless generosity, and compassionate spirit.

Her favorite pastimes were listening to gospel, cooking, thrifting, and entertaining her family and friends.  Shirley was often described as "a fashionista with a sharp sense of style".  As the last survivor of her generation, she often spoke about her family, particularly her sisters, and their close relationship.

The beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and aunt is survived by her only daughter, Janice Miller; granddaughter, Chilonia Peete-Meyers; grandsons, Cornelius Brown, Jr. and John Emory Brown; great granddaughter, Anosacha Peete-Meyers; great grandsons, Gage Peete-Meyers and Cornelius Brown III; great-great granddaughters, Karlee Peete-Wilkerson and Ziomora Virianna Meyers; nieces, Sandalin Steward, Ardele Williams, Yolanda Williams, Sabrina Hill (Arthur), Sandra Burgess-Myrick, Denise Williams (Bruce), Sanjena Williams, and Stacy Williams (William); nephews, Robert Williams, Jr. and Stanley Williams; and many cherished great nieces, including devoted Brittany Winston; great nephews, cousins, and friends.

Shirley dedicated her life to her family and her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched and the memories she leaves behind.
