Obituary

Ruby Virginia Taylor Nevells was born on April 10, 1937, in Petersburg, Virginia, to the late James and Fannie Taylor. She was raised with strong values of faith, family, and service that would guide her throughout her life.

A devoted Christian woman, Ruby was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church (Disputana, VA), where she faithfully served as an usher for many years. Her commitment to her church community reflected her deep love for God and her passion for serving others.

Ruby was known for her strong work ethic and caring spirit. She was employed at Brown & Williamson for many years. She was also employed at the Glenna Jean. Later she joined the staff of the Holiday Inn Koger Center. She touched the lives of countless families through her kindness and dedication. She also had a special love for helping others, as a foster parent.

She found joy in her Harley Davidson and being a member of the Cycle Queens of America Motorcycle Club. Ruby loved music, enjoyed playing bingo, and cherished spending time with her family. She loved going to casinos with her sisters and working on word search puzzles. Whether laughing, sharing stories, or simply being together, she valued every moment with those she loved.

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Ruby peacefully transitioned from this life, surrounded by the love of her daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Fannie Taylor; her siblings, Mildred Young, Earlene Taylor; and son-in-law, Charles Lewis.

Ruby leaves to cherish her loving memory her daughters, Jacqueline Goodwyn-Lewis, Debra Goodwyn, Sandra Alston, and Ireatha Barber (Troy); her siblings, James O. Taylor, Elgin Taylor, and Marsha Mabry; five grandchildren, Christopher Goodwyn, Recharde Goodwyn (Monique), Jasmine Goodwyn, Diandra Alston (Jamal), and Tiara Alston; three greatgrandchildren, Arriyah Goodwyn, Dorien Goodwyn, Jaelen Osborne, and Elleri Osborne (arriving in July 2026); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends (to include Michelle Mays and Josephine Epps). A special thanks goes to the staff at Gentiva Hospice for the care of our loved one.

Ruby will be remembered as a woman of faith, strength, and love—a true blessing to all who knew her.
