Obituary

With profound sadness, we share that Rocky Gholson has passed away in Petersburg, Virginia on November 27, 2025, peacefully in his childhood home, once lived and loved. Born on August 14, 1965, in Jamaica, Queens, New York to the late Lee and Joan Gholson, Rocky later moved to Petersburg, Virginia, where he grew up and formed lifelong memories.

Rocky attended Petersburg High School, where he shined both on and off the court. A talented athlete and natural leader, he played basketball and was proudly crowned Prom King of the Class of 1983. As the middle child of three sons, he carried a strong sense of responsibility, love, and leadership that followed him throughout his life.

His passion and skill for basketball earned him a full scholarship to Howard University, where he completed his degree in Public Relations. After graduating from Howard University in 1988, Rocky pursued his dream of acting and moved to Los Angeles, California, bringing with him his charisma, ambition, and unshakable determination.

Life shifted after his late wife, Cristina Gholson, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rocky put family first and redirected his career, unknowingly stepping into his true lifelong purpose. He began working as a teacher for the Anaheim Union School District, quickly becoming a beloved and unforgettable figure. His ability to connect deeply with students, uplift them, and make them feel seen made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

Rocky later went on to serve for 15 years as the Educational Development Coordinator for the MLB Urban Youth Academy, where his influence expanded even further. He touched the lives of thousands of student athletes, many of whom went on to play in the Major Leagues. His dedication to their success, academically, personally, and athletically, was unmatched. He poured his heart into his work and took tremendous pride in making a difference.

To know Rocky was to feel loved. His loving energy, kindness, understanding spirit, humor, and unforgettable hugs filled every room he entered. He was a widowed husband, a devoted father, a cherished grandfather, a loving brother, and a true friend to many. His presence brought comfort, joy, and light to everyone around him.

Rocky leaves behind his daughter, Rockelle (Kresean); and two grandchildren who were the pride of his life, Kalei and Kresean Jr. He is also deeply missed by his brothers, James (Tonya) and Jeffrey (Susan, deceased), who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Rocky leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and impact - one that will continue to shine through the countless lives he touched.
