Richard I.
Carruthers, Sr.
Dec 22, 1940 — Dec 9, 2025
Richard Carruthers, 84, passed on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at home with his family. Richard was born on December 22, 1940, in Shelby, North Carolina, to the late Willie and Ruth Carruthers. He lived with his grandmother until he was 12, then he moved to Washington, DC, with his mother. Once he graduated from high school he moved to New York.
Richard had two sons, Richard Carruthers, Jr. and his late son, Steven Gardener. In 1979, Richard married Stephanie and they had two children, Omar and Tivoni. Richard worked at Northrop Grumman for over seven years. Later he worked at New York State Juvenile Delinquent Facility for Boys.
Richard retired from Wyandanch School District as a grounds man. He was known for the beautiful landscape he gave to the school grounds and his beautiful yard. Richard loved people and worked on various committees for the youth. His family was very important, and he worked hard to provide for them. In 2004, he and his family moved to Dinwiddie, Virginia. Richard carried that same idea of taking care of his yard and planting beautiful flowers, where his yard became a place of beauty.
In 2019, Richard dedicated his life to Jehovah. He realized what he was studying from the Bible was the truth, so he would talk to anyone he knew about the Bible truth. He loved his spiritual family and they loved him. Richard had a heart of gold and he would help anyone he could.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Stephanie, children, Richard Carruthers, Jr. (Alisa), Omar Carruthers (Courtney), and Tivoni Carruthers; a host of grandchildren, Amari, Maleya, Aniyah, Omir, Jazlyn, Promise, Mahoganie and Sharmila; and great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law; and host of cousins, close friends and spiritual brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 575 Old Wagner Road, Petersburg, VA.
