Obituary

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Mrs. Queen Estelle Jones, the daughter of the late William Wooden, Sr. and Geraldine Alice Wooden, was born in Newville, Virginia, on August 10, 1956, and entered eternal rest on Thursday, October 30, 2025.

She attended the Prince George Public School System. In 1974, at age 17, Queen married the love of her life, Vernard Lee Jones, Sr., and they remained lifelong partners for 51 years. Together, they raised four children: Vernard Jones, Jr., Clinton Jones, Queen Jones-Harris, and Dawn Jones.

Over the years, she launched a life full of love, friendship, and meaning through her work in hospitality services, as a home health companion, and as a volunteer at the Waverly Health and Rehabilitation Center. Queen shared a special bond with her family and touched the lives of those crossing her path.

Queen was known for her straightforward personality. She said what was on her mind and meant it, giving tough love with a big heart. She had a knack for braiding hair and often braided her niece's hair, which gave her immense joy and fulfillment. Queen herself frequently rocked her long blonde signature braids that reached her waist fashionably. She loved a good Bingo, Corn Hole, or Pac-Man game. Still, her hobby was drawing, and she was artistically talented. But, among all her extraordinary talents, fulfillments, and memories, her decision to accept Christ as her personal Savior is the most rewarding and meaningful part of her life and legacy.

She fought a good fight, kept the faith, and won her race gracefully. Possibly, she was thinking, "There's a leak in this old building, and my soul has got to move," for I have weathered life's storms far too long. Lord, thank you for giving me more time to pray, see, and spend with my loved ones.  And as she rested by the banks of the Jordan, ticket in hand, she watched the ships as they passed along. She reached out to one and requested, "Take me to the King!" And it's well with our souls!

Queen was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughters, Kierra Harris and Ikeyia Jones; father and mother-in-law, Samuel Sr., and Ida G. Jones; brothers, James Pettaway and Daniel Wooden; brothers-in-law, Charlie Givens, Elder Ernest Jones, Jeff Reynolds, Clinton Jones; and sister-in-law, Joan Wyche.

Queen leaves to cherish her memory and to continue her legacy of love: her loving and devoted husband, Vernard Jones, Sr.; children, the apple of her eye, Vernard Jones, Jr. (Stephanie), Clinton Jones, Queen Jones-Harris, Dawn Jones; and the dog, Petie; grandsons, Deonta Jones (Anna), Montriel Jones, Darius Sheridan, Kenneth Harris III, Quavon Taylor, Daivon Jones, Quenton Harris, Kevin Lacks, Jr. (Jaelynn), and Mekhi White; granddaughters, Ashley Johnson and Khaniya White; great-grandchildren, Kionni Harris, Amara Lacks, Zaynn Lacks, Vehan Taylor, Ronne Taylor, and Parker Jones; brothers, William Wooden (Sandra), Henry Wooden, and Robin Wooden (Bonita); goddaughters, Patricia and Lyzeriah Gholson; sisters, Dolly Wooden, Marie Sykes (Charles), and Jacqueline Wooden; brothers-in-law, Samuel Jones, Jr., Moses Jones (Robin), and James Clary (Elonda); sisters-in-law, Alice Givens, Jean Reynolds, Netra Jones, and Lenora Jones; aunt, Mary Sue Petteway, and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and great friends.

Her special tribute and cherished circle included: her beloved sister, Marie Sykes, Uncle Robert, and aunt, Ruth Petteway. Two who remained irreplaceable in her heart were her niece, Gwendolyn Turner, and her best friend, Constance Hill-Jones.

Queen shared a grand thanks to her number one caregiver, husband, Vernard Jones, Sr. She was also thankful for the care and services provided by Bon-Secours Southside Medical Center, Hospice ACG Care Team, Vanessa, Kelsey, and Olivia, as well as caregivers, Cynthia Ruffin and Sharon Barrow. We miss you, Queen! Rest Peacefully!
