Mongloria Y.
Cleveland "Ruby"
Jan 31, 1930 — May 14, 2026
Mrs. Mongloria "Ruby" Y. Cleveland peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on May 14, 2026, in the comfort of her home in North Dinwiddie, Virginia, while peacefully sleeping, surrounded by the love, prayers, and memories of those who cherished her deeply. Born on January 31, 1930, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Mongloria lived a life defined by faith, education, service, resilience, and unconditional love for her family and community.
Although born in Louisiana, Mongloria's parents, Majorie and Robert Young Sr., later moved their family to Stony Creek, Virginia, where they owned and operated the well-known Young's Inn and General Store. For more than 60 years, Young's Inn served as a staple within the community, touching countless lives through service, fellowship, and dedication.
At a young age, Mongloria accepted Christ and was baptized in the waters of Stony Creek, Virginia. She remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life and was a devoted member of Galilee Baptist Church in Stony Creek, Virginia. Her relationship with God guided her through every season of life and served as the foundation of her strength and grace.
Mongloria, lovingly known by many as "Ruby," was raised in Sussex County, Virginia, where she attended school and graduated before continuing her education at Bennett College, majoring in Education. Her passion for learning and dedication to children led her back home to teach in Sussex County. After becoming injured and disabled later in life, her determination never wavered. She returned to school and earned an advanced degree in Curriculum from Columbia University.
Mongloria later retired in New Jersey after dedicating 31 years to the field of education. Even after retirement, her nurturing spirit continued as she lovingly raised her granddaughter alongside her husband following the passing of her daughter.
She was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in 1969 through the Zeta Omega Omega Chapter. Mongloria remained a proud and devoted member throughout her life, deeply valuing the bonds of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. She later served as President of the Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® from 1988 through 1991. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly in leadership and mentorship. In 1989, under her leadership, 22 women became members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. At the age of 90, she was honored with her Golden Soror recognition, a milestone she treasured deeply. Over the years, she faithfully served in numerous organizations and leadership roles, including serving as Basileus.
Mongloria was an avid reader, a woman of wisdom and elegance, and someone who embodied strength, perseverance, dignity, and unwavering faith. Those who knew her witnessed a woman who carried herself with grace while remaining deeply devoted to her family and to God.
Mongloria was preceded in death by her parents, Majorie and Robert Young Sr.; her brother, Robert Young Jr.; her beloved husband, Mr. James Cleveland; and her daughter, Marsha Y. Sims-Hamilton.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughters, Carolyn Robinson, Valerie Hamilton, and Robin Holden Boyd; her devoted granddaughter, Mrs. Soliel Grandison, and husband, Leneir Grandison; her cherished great-grandchildren, Kendall M. Grandison and Cameron H. Grandison; her grandson, Andre Robinson; great-grandson, Tylon Robinson; Tylon's wife, Sydney Robinson; and their daughter, Mary Robinson. She also leaves behind dedicated cousins, Armand Ellis and Joanne Jolly-Ellis; a host of extended family members, sorority sisters, caregivers, dear friends, and her devoted longtime friend and neighbor, Tammie Rollins-Hines, who loved and supported her throughout her life.
The family would especially like to acknowledge the love and care provided over the years by her daughters Carolyn and Valerie; Mrs. Rhonda Washington; Mrs. Yvonne Chavis; Mrs. Karen Spratley; Maryland Thompson; and many others whose kindness and support meant so much. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to HCG Hospice, especially nurses Sara, Erica, and Jackie; social worker Erica; and certified nursing assistant Vanessa. Their compassion, dedication, and unmatched care during this difficult time brought great comfort and peace to the family.
While words cannot fully express the sorrow felt by her passing, the family finds peace in knowing she transitioned peacefully and faithfully into eternal rest. We praise God for the gift of her life, the love she shared, and the powerful legacy she leaves behind. Her wisdom, faith, compassion, and enduring spirit will continue to live on through all who knew and loved her.
In accordance with Mongloria's wishes, there will be no formal service or memorial. Instead, she asked that continued prayers be lifted for her granddaughter and immediate family as they navigate this tremendous loss.
