Obituary

Lucille C. Brown was born on September 1, 1935, in Martin County, North Carolina, to the late Aaron and Dora Brown. She peacefully departed this life on April 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and strength.

Lucille graduated from E.J. Hayes High School in Williamston, North Carolina, and continued her education at Martin Community College. She later moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she began her professional career working at the public library. Upon returning to North Carolina, she pursued a career in nursing, during which she met her late husband, Calvin Speller.

Lucille was a woman of deep and abiding faith. She loved gospel music and found great joy in reading her Bible and studying the Word of the Lord. She often spent time writing in her notebooks and was known for speaking words of encouragement and aspiration over the lives of her children and grandchildren.

She had a vibrant personality and a love for beauty and style. Lucille especially enjoyed receiving gifts from her loved ones, particularly jewelry, and clothing. She had a remarkable sense of fashion and was rarely seen without one of her beloved hats or signature rings.

Above all, Lucille will be remembered for her love of family, her unwavering faith, and her signature sass. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Dora Brown; her son, Frankie Darnell Speller; her grandson, Raheem Brown; and nine siblings, George Brown, Charlie Brown, Clarence Brown, Hattie Brown, Viola Brown, Blanche Brown, Ollie Moses, Dorothy Worsley, and Janie Brown Burns.

Lucille leaves to cherish her memory of three loving children, Marilyn Elaine Griswell (Tyrone) of Pahrump, NV, Vera Denise Speller-Allen (Winston) of Rocky Mount, NC and Gerald Eton Robertson of Chesterfield, VA; her eight grandchildren, Darnell Speller, Felicia Speller, Daniel Wilson, Robert Speller, Jeremy Wilson, Shakeya Brunson and Destiny Allen; great grandchildren, Quashawn Speller, Ja'Naria Davis, Moriah Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Jr., Taylar Mitchell, Mckenzie Speller, Daniel Wilson, Malik Speller, Skye Wilson, Blaise Wilson and Sohni Wilson; four great-great grandchildren, Ayanna Speller, Aubree Williams, Ja'Norie Williams and Harmony Speller; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will keep her in their hearts.
