"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful." 2 Timothy 4:7 (NLT)
With heavy hearts yet grateful spirits, we announce that God, in His infinite wisdom, called Malcolm from life on earth to eternal rest on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
Malcolm was born on September 29, 1965, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Thurman and Mary Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Richard Battle, Sr.; grandparents, Arthur and Amanda Peterson; brothers, Dondril and Thurman Peterson; nephew, Trevelle Barner; and his niece, Shaquita Fortune.
From an early age, Malcolm and his brothers were instilled with the values of faith, education, and perseverance principles, deeply rooted by their father and carried throughout Malcolm's life. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1983 and followed in the footsteps of his older brothers by enrolling at Saint Paul's College. He later transferred to Virginia State University on a full ROTC scholarship, where he majored in Political Science and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army in 1987.
Malcolm furthered his education through advanced studies at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Eastern Michigan University, and Virginia State University, earning multiple graduate degrees. These academic achievements enriched his knowledge and fortified his exceptional leadership skills.
With more than 25 years of distinguished service, Malcolm dedicated his life to his country. He served with honor and courage in several military conflicts, leading from platoon to battalion command with unwavering integrity and steadfast commitment. His career was a testament to his dedication to duty and his deep sense of purpose.
Malcolm is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife and best friend, Zena Peterson. He is also survived by three beloved sisters, Orette Peterson, Natalie Clanton (the late James), and Beverly Oneal (Walter); one loving brother, Gary Tucker (Pamela); and his godson, Sorterrio Pope (Airelle).
In addition, he is mourned by his cherished mother-in-love, Brenda Battle (the late Richard); his caring sisters-in-love, Miranda Cain (Alexander Sr.), Monica Bagley (Hosza Sr.), Sonya Mason (Charles), and Latisha Jones; and his devoted brothers-in-law, Richard Battle, Jr. (Casandra) and Alonzo Battle.
Malcolm will forever hold a special place in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews: Lisa, Verrone (Tameka), the late Shaquita (Scott), Alexander Jr. (Danitra), Caselle, Miconda, Tateasha (Nasir), Reckoe (Amber), Dennis (BriYanna), Quentin (Shomeka), Keiara, Niasha, Antoine (Taiasha), Raven, Angeline, Hosza Jr. (Cyndi), Demarcus, Ryan (Haley), and Alaiya.
He also leaves behind a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and extended family members who will deeply miss him, especially his dear cousins, Keith Thweatt and Donna Brown; and his lifelong friends, Darryl Harrison, Kalvin Young, Rodney Parham, Torase Williams and Robert (Dean) Williams.
Malcolm was a man of deep faith, humility, discipline and honor. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the service he rendered, and the enduring lessons of strength, love, and perseverance he passed on to all who knew him. His memory will forever be etched in our hearts.
A heartfelt note of gratitude to his extraordinary medical team: Dr. Yuvraj Choudhary (who will always hold a special place in our hearts), Dr. Hillary Flaherty, Dr. Michael Rose, Dr. Amy Rose, Dr. Daniel Woolley, and both Dr. David Randolph Sr. and Dr. David Randolph II.
