Obituary

Kenneth Lee Whiting, affectionately known as "Country", of Hopewell, VA, slipped away peacefully on the evening of June 5, 2025 at Henrico Doctors' Hospital in Henrico, VA. Born on September 21, 1941, to the late William Henry Whiting and Mary Virginia Savoy in Prince George, VA.  Kenneth confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior and entered into membership with the Morning Star Baptist Church at an early age.

He was educated in the Prince George County School System. Kenneth served honorably in the United States Army completing one tour of duty in Vietnam. While in the Army Kenneth sharpened his culinary skills. Upon returning home he loved showing those skills off by cooking for his family.

After his release from the Army, Kenneth held several jobs, finding Benjamin Moore Paints in Richmond to be a good fit he stayed there eventually retiring. Kenneth did not like retirement, so he tried his hand at restoring and refinishing furniture with his brothers William and DeOtis at Wm. T. Savoy Upholstery and Furniture Repair. In his 70's, Kenneth was employed with UPS at Richmond International Airport; a job he often talked about how much he enjoyed.

God blessed Kenneth a long life marked by strength, kindness and dedication to his family and friends. He will be remembered for his phone calls and visits to "just check on you".  He loved visiting family and friends, watching baseball games, listening to music, dancing and cutting grass.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his father, Henry Whiting; mother, Mary Virginia Savoy Whiting; bonus father, Purcell Johnson; siblings, William Savoy, Sr., Rachel Robinson and Betty Whiting.

He leaves a legacy of love that will be cherished by his son, Paul Whiting of Richmond; devoted friend, Rosa Bassett of Hopewell; sister, Jacqueline Johnson of Prince George; three brothers, DeOtis, John, and Fitzgerald Johnson (Shanice) all of Richmond. Kenneth also leaves to cherish his memories estranged wife, Mary Whiting; stepdaughter, Deborah Scott; step-son, Eric Scott; two devoted nieces, Melanie Alston and Sharonda Whiting; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will surely miss his calls and visits.

Kenneth earthly presence will be missed by all that knew and loved him, but we know as he constantly reminded us that he is in God's care.
