Obituary

Katrine Madeline Nelson-Bey departed from this place of life on November 29, 2025, at age 71. Katrine was born on October 20, 1954, to Brother Mohammed Nelson-Bey, Sr., and Sister Joyce Nelson-Bey. She was the granddaughter of Sister Rachel Nelson-Bey and Brother Frederick Nelson-Bey, a successor to the Honorable Noble Prophet and the 2nd Supreme Grand Advisor and Moderator of the Moorish Science Temple of America, Inc.

Following the footsteps of her grandfather and father, Katrine became a devoted member and Devine Minister of the Moorish Science Temple of America, Inc. on Moorish National Home #1.  She was passionate about her faith and dedicated herself to the Moorish Science Temple of America. Katrine currently held the title of Assistant Grand Governess of VA. She was the first female Mufty on Moorish Home #1 and formerly served as Grand Sheikess, Treasurer, Secretary, and taught for many years as the Sunday School Teacher of MNH#1. Katrine was also an active member of the Sister's Auxiliary and participated in the 1st Young Muslim National League. She took pride in serving the Moorish Science Temple by cooking in the kitchen, serving the Moors, and carrying the traditions of her mother providing gift bags and treats for all the children on the colony.

Katrine was a graduate of Prince George High School, Class of 1973. She went on to further her education by studying at John Tyler Community College and Richard Bland College. Katrine loved to travel, party (especially with her family), feed and spread love within the community, and sing. She sang in several bands as the lead vocalist with the latest being "Playtime Unlimited." Katrine truly adored her family and cherished her children, grandchildren, and great grands. She loved on everyone and held the title of "Ma" to many of her children's friends, the Moorish community and the tri-cities. Katrine had a heart of gold, was always welcoming with an endless cup of love and family for anyone whom she encountered.

Katrine was also the Owner of Shut Yo Mouf Soulfood Restaurant, located in Petersburg VA. She was the vision and driving spirit behind Shut Yo Mouf Soulfood. Long before a menu was printed or a stove was warmed, she dreamed of a space where a community could gather and comfort each other in a way only home and love could provide. Opening the restaurant, candidly named after her mother's saying at the dinner table, was not only a dream come true, but a manifestation of her hard work and dedication to food service. Katrine co-owned SYM Restaurant with her youngest son Chef Mizraim Kidd-Bey and recently celebrated their 9-year anniversary and was officially recognized as a "Top 10 of 2025 Virginia Award Winner in the Soul Food Restaurant category." She also worked side by side with her daughter Mekiyah, faithful friend Gary, and a few other family and friends showing them the ropes to continue her legacy. Katrine took pride in serving her community within the area of the restaurant by donating countless meals, clothing, gloves, hats, and blankets to those less fortunate every week.

Katrine was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents, Joyce and Mohammed; cherished aunt, Florence McDonald; uncle, Charles Evans; sisters, Gertrude Nelson-Bey, Julia "Freda" Reese-Bey, and Zelpha Nelson-Bey; brother, Mohammed Nelson-Bey, Jr.; and great grandson, Zahavi Blu Chisholm.

She is survived by her two sisters, Yvonne Phelps-Bey and Zenoba Powell (Steven); one brother Ravanna Nelson-Bey.

Katrine's memory will forever be cherished by her loving children, Alonzo James (Tera), Katrice Mason-Bey (Robert), Dorothea Mason-Bey (Laurice), Mekiyah Kidd-Bey, and Mizraim Tucker-Bey (Devonte); twelve grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; her beloved partner, Gary Bryan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, her Moorish family, and friends. Among her friends are a few devoted sisters: Nadine Johnson-Bey, Muriel Jenkins-Bey, Carrie Lee West-Bey, Susan Dunbar-Bey, Carol Tillar, and Maria Toruella.
