Obituary

Joyce Ann Bassett Lewis was born on March 18, 1945, to the late Robert Sr. and Goldie Brown Bassett. She departed the cares of this life and entered the arms of Jesus on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Timothy; her son, Matthew; her son-in-law, Donald; her brother, Clarence Bassett; her sisters, Cathy Branch (David) and Kimberly Bassett; and her close friend and sister-in-law, Marthann Woodley Adams.

Joyce was educated in Chesterfield County Public Schools and graduated from Carver High School in 1966. She married her high school sweetheart, Timothy, and she later obtained a Certificate of Apprenticeship in Cosmetology.

Joyce worked in the cafeteria at Thomas Dale High School and later for Macke (Service America) for over 15 years. In 2009, she retired from Chesterfield County as a school bus driver, with 20 years of service.

Joyce gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined Brown Grove Baptist Church in Midlothian, VA, where she served on the Deaconess Ministry, was a member of the Gospelettes (Gospel Choir), and served as President of both the Ushers Ministry and the Joyous Jewels (Seniors Ministry).

She enjoyed cooking, singing, traveling, and spending time with her family. She sponsored several bus trips to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, amusement parks, and sightseeing in Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, and Canada.

Fond memories will be cherished by her daughter, Shelly; daughter-in-law, Katreena; granddaughters, Nichelle and Danae; and her siblings, Arletha Gilliam, Louise Bassett, Juanita Harvey (Mack), Goldie Miller, Robert Bassett, Jr., Betty Shelton (Gary), and Sandra Walton (Melvin). She also leaves behind her godchildren, Artrice Harris (Will), Steven Brown (Chanel), and Michelle Williams (Pierce); bonus grandchildren, Zana and Zachary Gatling; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was a mother to many and a friend to all. Her laughter was infectious, and her quiet, calm spirit spoke volumes. Joyce will be cherished and remembered by all who had the opportunity to be in her presence.
