Josephine V.
Trent Vaughan
Nov 21, 1940 — Aug 8, 2026
Josephine Virginia Trent Vaughan, lovingly known as "Josie" or "Jo", entered eternal rest on August 8, 2026. Born to the late James and Josephine Brown Trent, she grew into a woman whose life reflected faith, devotion, craftsmanship, and quiet strength.
Josephine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James A. Vaughan, Jr.; her daughter Darnita V. Brown; her brothers Cornelius, William, and Ollie Trent; and her sisters, Catherine Trent Garnett, Lucy Trent Coleman and Rosa Trent Gooden.
Josephine was educated at Carver High School and later dedicated 30 years of loyal service to Virginia State University, retiring as Custodial Manager. A gifted seamstress and upholsterer, she took great pride in her ability to create dresses without a pattern and restore sofas and chairs with skill and artistry-talents she used to care for and uplift her family.
At an early age, Josephine accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Lee's Chapel AME Zion Church, now Community Independent Methodist Church. Throughout her many years at CIMC, she served faithfully with the Senior Ministry, the Sunday School Ministry, Just Us Girls Ministry, the Usher Board, the Gospel Choir, and the Sanctuary Choir, offering her voice, her time, and her heart to the ministries she cherished.
She leaves to honor her memory: three daughters, Karen Vaughan Lewis (Tiny), Erlene Vaughan Lumpkin (Christopher) and Vanessa Vaughan Mason (Garrett); and one son, James A. Vaughan III (Darma).
Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren: Paula V. Burroughs (Doran), Diona Lumpkin, Chereese Vaughan, Cristen Lumpkin, Brittany Vaughan-Wright, Karl Lewis, James A. Vaughan IV and Jamoni Mason.
She is further blessed with ten great grandchildren: Jayla, Jakobi, Jordin, Ryleigh, Kamille, Madesyn, Morgan, James V, Cairo, Cannon, and Jett.
Josephine is also survived by one brother, Walter R. Trent (Zelda); two sisters, Janet B. Trent Richards and Edna Trent Jones; sisters-in-law, Nannie B. Trent, Hilda Trent, Sheila Harris, and Shirley Barksdale; godson, Shawn Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Josephine lived a life defined by faith, service, and love. Her creativity, her generosity, and her unwavering devotion to her family will remain a cherished legacy for all who were blessed to know her.
