Jerome M.
Jones "Butter"
Aug 26, 1946 — May 7, 2026
Mr. Jerome Maple Jones, affectionately known as "Butter," peacefully transitioned from this life on Thursday, May 7, 2026. He was born on August 26, 1946, in Surry County to the late Oscar Jones, Sr. and Hester G. Jones of Prince George, Virginia. He was baptized at an early age and became a member of Mount Hope Baptist Church. He often attended Piney Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.
Jerome "Butter" grew up on a farm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and singing gospel music. He was known to sing "Jesus Be a Fence Around Me" at the funerals of family members and friends. Butter loved animals, especially dogs. He was well-known in the community and was a member of Green Top Hunting Club. Butter loved his family and friends and would go "the extra mile" for them. He was very generous and would give his very last to assist someone in need. Butter spent much of his adult life living in Patterson, New Jersey, where he raised his family. He returned to Virginia many years later. Butter was employed for many years at Sealy Mattress Company in New Jersey, and later at Prince George County Public Schools in Prince George, Virginia, until his health declined.
Butter was preceded in death by two daughters, Yvette L. Jones and Samantha Jones Alexander; and seven siblings: six brothers, Charlie Moody, Oscar "Mr. Puddin" Jones, Jr., Herbert "Knee-Knee" Jones, Eugene "Bootsie" Jones, Sr., Ronnie B. Jones, and Lewis Jones, Sr.; and one sister, Shirley Jones Crockett, who helped raise them.
Butter leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Tanika Holmes Jones; loving daughter, Kim Jones of Arizona; two sons, Cecil "Justice" Jones of Hopewell, Virginia, and Allan-Michael "Big Man" Jones of New Jersey; one stepdaughter, Jasmine Vincent of Norfolk, Virginia; one devoted sister, Margie Jones Claiborne; eight grandchildren, Carshema Jones (Simena), Shania Bush, Reggie Jones, Shamir Jones Alexander, Prestige Jones Edmonds, Simone Jones, Khalil Jones, and Aryah Jones; two great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Irving and father-in-law, Clarence Irving III; one sister-in-law, Charlene Jones; brother-in-law, Clarence Irving IV; devoted niece, Andrea Claiborne-DePriest; devoted cousin, Eddie Gant; devoted friends, Hannah Evans, and John and Shirley Allen; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, too numerous to name.
Butter loved and treated everyone the same. All his acts of kindness can never be told. He had a smile for everyone and a heart as pure as gold. To those who knew and loved him, his memory will never grow old.
