Jean W.
Pettiford
Feb 8, 1930 — Sep 6, 2025
Our hearts were saddened on Saturday, September 6, 2025, by the sudden passing of our beloved Jean Pettiford, 95, of Petersburg, VA.
Born on February 8, 1930, in Rocky Mount, NC, to the late Nannie and Joe Walston, she was the first cherished granddaughter of her grandparents, the late Rosa and George Vaughan. Later in life, she was lovingly reared by her grandparents before moving to New Jersey to live with her mother. She eventually made her way to Petersburg, VA, where she lived with her uncle and aunt, Elgin and Betsy Tann, and began building the life that would leave a lasting mark on all who knew her.
After settling in Petersburg, Jean worked hard to provide for her family and build a life she was proud of. She spent over 30 years working at Central State Hospital before retiring, showing the same dedication and perseverance that carried her through life. During that time, her career journey first began in the Laundry Department and later transitioned to Food Services, where her strong work ethic stood out. She took pride in everything she did, and her commitment was recognized with service awards that showed how hard she worked and how much she was valued.
Outside of work, Jean loved to show her personality through fashion. She was a true fashionista who enjoyed her jewelry, clothes, fancy hats, and shoes. She had hats for every style and occasion, always paired with matching shoes and beautiful suits. Her coats were just as stunning, adding to the elegance she carried with her. Jean was also proud of the home she purchased. Some of her favorite moments were spent sitting on the front steps, waving to neighbors as they passed by, or chatting across the yard with friends who pulled up to visit.
Her faith was strong and unwavering. Jean was a devoted member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church for more than 50 years, attending faithfully until her health no longer allowed. She also treasured time with her family, especially on birthdays when she was lovingly serenaded, surrounded with love and celebration. She also held close the memories of good times shared with lifelong friends, especially her dear friend Ms. Leola.
Jean was preceded in death by her mother and father, as well as her beloved husband, Colonial "Gus" Pettiford. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, James "Jimmy" Walston, Sr. (Debra), and her daughter, Gloria Barbour both of Petersburg, VA. She was blessed with grandchildren, Jamie McPherson (Gary) of Chester, VA, James Walston, Jr. (Monica) of Prince George, VA, Aliza Barbour of Petersburg, VA, and Bayton Barbour III (Sherell) of Chester, VA. Her legacy also continues through a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will carry her love forward for generations to come.
Jean also shared a sister-like bond with her devoted cousins, Gloria Felder of Richmond, VA, and Barbara Ann Vick (William) of Tarboro, NC. She will be remembered with love by her cherished neighbors, Etta Hopkins, Aminta Hopkins, Clarence "Bubba" Nelson and Jesse Nelson, along with her faithful caregivers and many special friends who stood by her side.
Though Jean may no longer be with us in body, her spirit, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will remain a source of comfort and joy for a lifetime.
