Obituary

James Hardy McCray of South Chesterfield, Virginia, peacefully answered God's call to rest on July 6, 2026.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest McCray, Sr. and Martha Newsome, and his brother, Douglas E. Newsome, Sr.

He was born on November 7, 1948, in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and was baptized at an early age at Bethesda Baptist Church. Later in life, he attended Bethany Church.

He was a proud graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1967. Following graduation, James honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he built a long career at Fort Lee, where he worked in the warehouse for many years before retiring at the young age of 50!

Retirement gave Boo-Boo the opportunity to enjoy the things he loved most. He cherished spending time with family and friends and never met a stranger. Known for his warm smile and welcoming spirit, he made everyone feel like family. He was an avid bowler, loved fishing, enjoyed trying his luck at the casino, and rarely missed a bus trip. Whether sharing stories, laughing with loved ones, or simply enjoying the company of others, James found joy in life's simple moments.

He gave more than he ever asked for and the world is gentler and better because he was in it. Above all, James was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and friend. His love for his family was unwavering, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity.

James leaves to cherish his loving memory: his children, Jamie Webster, Chamara McCray, Antoinette Bennett, and Marquetta Johnson. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his beloved grandchildren, Melika Robinson, Jayla Webster, Lennox Hardy Callahan, and Amiri Taylor.

James is also survived by his brothers, Ernest "Skipper" McCray, Jr. (Cordella) and Lawrence "Mannie" McCray (Delores); his sister-in-law, Andredoria "Cookie" Newsome; his aunt, Esther Locke of Akron, Ohio; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted friends.

James believed in showing up for the people he loved. He leaves a mark that time cannot erase and memories that will continue to bring smiles to all who knew him. Though his years with us may seem too few, those blessed to know him will forever treasure the love, laughter, wisdom, and joy he shared so freely.

2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Well done, good and faithful servant. You will forever be loved, forever be missed, and never be forgotten.
