Obituary

We gather today in love and remembrance to celebrate the life of James Rhymes, Jr., affectionately known as "Big Boy". Born on September 19, 1975, in Graceville, Florida, James was a man of quiet strength, a loving heart, and a spirit that touched everyone he met.

On June 19, 2025, at the age of 49, James answered the call of his Heavenly Father and peacefully transitioned to his eternal home. Though our hearts grieve, we rejoice in knowing that his soul is at rest, and his life was lived with purpose, love, and grace.

James was a faithful and hardworking man, most recently serving at Richard Bland College, where his positive energy and genuine care left a lasting impression on students and colleagues alike.

He was preceded in death by his devoted parents, James Rhymes, Sr. and Earnestine Rhymes, and is now reunited with them in God's loving presence.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Aqueellah Drew Rhymes; his beloved son, Xavier Harris; and his daughters, Jayla Drew-Smith, Jaylen Sloan, Jah'mora Drew-Rhymes and Makiyah King, each of whom he cherished deeply. His memory will also live on through his sister, Celestine Young; his many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family including his aunt Ella and uncle Timothy Joyner, and aunt Irene and uncle Dennis Bellamy.

James was a light in this world—his laughter, kindness, and generous spirit made every space he entered brighter. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a dependable friend, and a man whose presence brought comfort and joy.
