James A.
Walker
Feb 20, 1950 — Sep 8, 2025
A Life of Simple Joys and Lasting Love
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved, James Allen Walker, (affectionately called, Butch and Adam by his mom), age 75, who left us on September 8, 2025 at his home in Petersburg, VA to join his cherished family who preceded him in death. A product of Petersburg, where he spent the majority of his early life prior to relocating to Washington, DC, and New York City later on where he cultivated his relationship with his long-term friend and later wife Patricia Walker. Following this union, he returned to Virginia where he built a life reflective of joy and love.
James lived a life rooted in the simple pleasures that brought him the greatest joy. A devoted family man, he treasured every moment spent with those he loved, creating memories that will comfort us in the days ahead. His unwavering loyalty extended beyond family to his beloved Oakland Raiders, cheering them on through victories and defeats with the same steadfast dedication he brought to all aspects of his life. His early teachings began at Royal Baptist Church surrounded by family and friends. He was a proud graduate of Peabody High School Class of 1970. Following high school, James attended Virginia Union University.
Throughout his working years, James served his community with integrity and hard work, dedicating decades to both the Brown & Williams Tobacco Company and Petersburg Waste Water Management. His strong work ethic and reliability made him a respected colleague and friend to many.
Those who knew James will remember him for his artistic talents, his craft as a cook where he created meals that brought his family together around the table. His green thumb produced gardens that were sources of both pride and sustenance, reflecting his connection to the earth and appreciation for life's natural gifts. In quieter moments, he found solace in reading his Bible and reflecting on his faith, finding peace in spiritual contemplation and the small blessings of each day.
James leaves to cherish a loving and devoted daughter, Rhonda Butts; dedicated son, Quentin Blakes; three grandchildren, Jibril Johnson, Autumn Goode and Siaah Goode; caring and supportive sister, Tracie Kirkland (Robert); devoted nieces, Morgan (Ryan) and Maya; nephew, Samuel Kirkland; a great nephew, James and great niece, Olivia. In addition, he leaves to cherish fond memories of his uncle, Lee A. Fields; special cousins, Yvonne and Waynette Starke, Larry and Rufus McCray, Joyce Jones, Michael Sydnor and Robbie Taylor. Additionally, he leaves a few close friends, Carolyn Butts, Malcolm "Billy" Robertson, & life-long family friend, Joanne Lucas. In recent years, he often reflected that he was "the last one standing" among his generation, carrying the memories and stories of those who had gone before him with both sadness and honor.
James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Reverend J. L. Walker and mother, Dr. Antrynette Walker-Hall (who preceded him by 6-months); his cherished wife, Patricia Walker; his maternal and paternal grandparents; numerous aunts and uncles; dear cousins, Kim Starke and Alice Mae Sydnor, and several close friends.
While we mourn the loss of this gentle soul, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and gratitude. James's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, his dedication to family, and his ability to find joy in life's simplest moments.
His memory will be cherished by all who were blessed to know this remarkable man who understood that the greatest riches in life cannot be measured in material wealth, but in the love, we share and the peace we find in everyday blessings.
A gentle giant with a big heart has entered the pearly gates of heaven. Well done thy good and faithful servant.
