Gordon D.
"Coach" Batson
Mar 8, 1940 — Nov 20, 2025
Gordon D. Batson, known to many as "Coach" and "Coach Batson", of 11714 Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie, Virginia, entered eternal rest on November 20, 2025.
Born on March 8, 1940, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Gordon was the son of the late Claren and Julie Onitta Morrison Batson. The youngest of three children, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Anne Burns and Sue Warren. He was also preceded in death by his loving and loyal "fur baby", Pup.
Coach Batson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Salem College, Salem, West Virginia and a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Supervision from Virginia State College (University). Prior to the completion of his college education, Coach Batson was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a Medical Corpsman in Panama during the Vietnam War.
In 1972, the Dinwiddie County School Board issued Coach Batson a continuing contract. He remained an educator in Dinwiddie County until his retirement. During his tenure in Dinwiddie County, Coach Batson taught Health and Physical Education, Art, served as an Assistant Principal at Dinwiddie Junior High School, and was a wrestling and football coach.
An avid supporter of the Washing Redskins (Commanders), Coach enjoyed cheering on his favorite NFL Team and watching the games with his sons. Of course, even after his retirement, the Dinwiddie Generals held a special spot in his heart. Although he enjoyed his sports, one last pastime familiar to Coach ever since his childhood was watching birds, especially cardinals. He always looked upon them as creatures of beauty and a source of comfort.
Coach Batson leaves to cherish his memories: two sons, Cory Christopher Batson and his mother, Lydia Taylor Batson, both of Petersburg, Virginia and Bruce Drexel Batson and his mother, Terry Hobbs Batson, both of North Dinwiddie, Virginia; and a host of friends, former coaches and coworkers, brothers and sisters-in-law, Dinwiddie athletes and students who all have remained in his heart as God called him home.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 P.M., Sunday, December 7, 2025, in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA.
