Gloria Linda
King
Aug 21, 1951 — Apr 15, 2025
"For I reckon the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us." On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, around 4:24 A.M., God looked down on his daughter Linda and said, "Come on home, you have suffered enough. Take your rest, no more pain or suffering." Our hearts we're not ready but your wings were, so we gave her our blessing to go ahead and let go because we knew that she was tired. While her daughters and siblings stood guard over her watching and praying, Linda peacefully transitioned from her earthly home to Heaven where her parents, sisters and niece were all waiting for her.
Linda was born on August 21, 1951, the second daughter to the late Alice R. Chatman King and Elijah A. King, Sr., in a little house on Ann Street in Petersburg, Virginia. She was raised in the Delectable Heights Community, although she spent lots of time in Dinwiddie County visiting her grandparents. Linda was baptized at a young age at Sharon Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, Virginia, where her grandfather, Deacon Robert F. Chatman, Sr. was a founding member. She was educated in the Petersburg Public School System and graduated from Peabody High School Class of 1969. After graduating high school, Linda began working in the manufacturing industry as a seamstress for several local companies. She was also the first babysitter for her niece and nephews. Among those were the late Tameka R. King and Harvey Giles III, whom she helped her mother raise.
Linda was the true definition of a faith walker. She never complained about what she was going through. Instead, she would say, "I'm covered under the blood." In fact, after a five-year battle for her life, we only heard her question God once and that was simply "why?" During Linda's childhood and most of her adult life, she was under the spiritual leadership of the Rev. Dr. Herbert Anderson, Pastor Emeritus of Sharon Baptist Church and now Pastor Terry Norman, until her health began to decline.
Linda was a lifelong avid Dallas Cowboys fan. She excelled at sewing, making crafts and just about anything using her hands. Linda was an exceptional cook which was passed down to her by her mother. She took pride in celebrating life with her family and friends through her food and fellowship. Linda's macaroni and cheese, spaghetti salad and sweet potato pies became staples and the most loved dishes among her family and friends. Linda's house was the place for a good ole backyard barbecue back in the day and a place where all of the family would just show up to as soon as they hit town.
Linda loved to take risks, if money could be made by playing card games and bingo in her younger years with her close friends Thalia Robertson, Mable Blackwell and the Lewis family. Before Linda's health declined, she could be found sitting at her kitchen table working out her lottery numbers or rubbing a scratch ticket.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Alice R. Chatman King and Elijah A. King, Sr., grandparents, Deacon Robert F. Chatman, Sr., Alice Mitchell Chatman and Lillian Tucker Sydnor; sisters, Priscilla Ann King, Regina King Moore and Karen Hill; brother, Robert; and her niece, Tameka Renee King.
Left to celebrate Linda's life and legacy are her loving and devoted family to include her daughters, Renita King Brown and Adrian King Clark; sons-in-love, Darron L. Brown and Billy L. Clark; bonus daughter, Felicia Diggs; grandchildren, Ashley Renee Davis (David), DaRon Brown and bonus grandson, Daquon Glenn (Tamika); great grandson, DeKari T. Walker, Jr.; grand-pup, Jean Rose (we call her Olivia); brother, Elijah A. King, Jr. (Susan); sisters, Helen K. Coleman, Phyllis J. Middlebrooks, Tanya King Jones, bonus sister, Denise Robertson; bonus brother, Keith Clanton; devoted friends since the age of nine, Nancie Rives and Frances Robinson; nieces and nephews, Harvey Giles III, Jeffrey King, Willis Binns, Jr. (Laquata), Devon King (Jamel), Bernard King, Markes Jackson, Curtis Coleman, Makeisha Coleman, Jolisa Williams, Ernesta Greene and Leo the pup; twenty seven great nieces and nephews; several other friends, relatives and cousins to include devoted cousin, Novella Ann Payton who supported Linda during her illness and passing.
Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Sharon Baptist Church, 26804 Fort Emory Road, North Dinwiddie, the Rev. Terry Norman, Pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
