Obituary

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away." -Revelations 24:4

On Wednesday July 9, 2025, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, Gloria Jane Howell Morman. Gloria was born April 4, 1949, in Petersburg, VA. She graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1967, where she was a member of the Lions Cheerleading Squad. In 1981, Gloria attended John Tyler Community College where she obtained her ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing), all while meeting the family demands of husband and two energetic children. Gloria shared her love for nursing at many different places; Popular Springs, Petersburg General, Tappahanock Hospital, and Richmond Memorial Hospital. She was also employed at Central State Hospital for 30 plus years and retired in 2018.

Gloria was known affectionately as, "Ma", "Nana", "Glo", and "Morman". She was smart and multitalented. Like her mother, she was a great cook and loved it. Her most notable recipe was Italian Zuppa Soup, which most agreed was better than Olive Garden's. She often shared her love for cooking with her coworkers. Gloria was a self-taught seamstress and upholster. She made curtains, altered uniforms, and reupholstered her own furniture. Her huge heart and generous spirit led her to run a half-way house and become a foster mom, always willing to help anyone in need. While many look forward to retirement to travel and typical selfish pursuits, Gloria's dream retirement life was to do all she could for her great grandchildren whom she adored.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Annie "Love" Royall Howell and James Howell, Sr.; brother, Matthew Alexander Howell, Sr.; and granddaughter, Cheyenne Morman.

Gloria leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Steve Morman, Jr. (Portia) of Petersburg, VA and Jason Morman (Amanda) of Richmond, VA; one sister, Annette Crews (John) of Chesterfield, Virginia; brother, James A. "Snooks" Howell, Jr. (Sandra) of Petersburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Kristen Morman (whom she raised as her daughter), Caitlyn Butts, Chelsey Morman, Cierra Morman, Shea'LA Morman, McKenzie Morman, Jason Morman, Jr. and Summer Morman; great grandchildren, Aiden and Tia Raines, SaNiaa Coleman, JahFari and Tahir Peterson, Za'Niyah Tucker and A'mira Morman; two nephews, John Crews III and Matthew Howell, Jr.; one niece, Tiffany Lundy; her best friends, Ollie Sharper and Annette Tate; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Marmora Baptist Church, 2901 Exeter Mill Road, Church Road, VA, the Rev. Darrin L. Hill, Pastor/eulogist.
