Obituary

Ernestine Brown-Anderson was born September 22, 1942, in Hackensack, New Jersey, to William Louis Hunter and Etta Hunter raised in Seaboard, NC, where she met and married Phillip Brown.

Ernestine Brown-Anderson passed on Saturday, June 7, 2025, after a short fight with illness. God saw fit to give her rest and the curtain of life closed for her on this side of earth.

Ernestine Brown-Anderson was employed in Portsmouth, VA at an elementary school, and afterwards, high school where she was a cook. Upon moving to New Jersey, she was employed by Essex County Hospital where she also worked in the kitchen as a cook.  Lastly, she then was employed with The Isaiah House in Newark, NJ where she worked in the kitchen, again as a cook. Everyone thinks their mom can cook, but Ernestine's passion was cooking and, boy, could she throw down when it came to preparing meals. She was an excellent cook.

Ernestine Brown-Anderson was preceded in death by her first husband, Phillip Brown (preceded in death at 46 years of age … gone too soon); father, William Louis Hunter; mother, Etta Hunter Hart; two brothers, Lawrence Hunter and Moses Hunter; three sisters, Alice Nell Kee, Annie Goode, and Nancy Lee Taylor; and a grandson, Ernest Brown.

Ernestine Brown-Anderson met a man named Fred "Pete" Anderson when she journeyed to New Jersey.  Their friendship developed for 45 years and later they tied the knot here in Petersburg, VA. They united in holy matrimony on April 22, 2022, by their grandchildren, Minister Lorraine Brown-Brown and the late Evangelist Ernest Brown.

Ernestine Brown-Anderson leaves to cherish her loving memory her husband, Fred "Pete" Anderson; her last living sister of seven siblings, Gracie Louise Hunter; two children, Phillip Brown of Thailand and Shelia Jones of Petersburg, VA;  three granddaughters, Stephanie Jones and Shelia Jones both of Dover, DE and Lorraine Brown-Brown of Petersburg, VA; four great grandchildren, Thaddeus Brown (Brittany Ann) of Las Vegas, NV,  Taj-Aziz "Petey" Brown (Yerlin) of Raliegh, NC, Shakiel Jones of Dover, DE and Tameani Brown of East Orange, NJ; eleven great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
