Edith Bowman
King
Jan 7, 1937 — Aug 9, 2026
Born in Charles City, VA on January 7, 1937, Edith was the third born of the late James Monroe Bowman, Sr. and Etta J. Bowman Creighton. Edith found the Lord and was a member of Parrish Hill Baptist Church, Charles City, VA. The family moved to Prince George, VA, where she became a member of Harrison Grove Baptist Church. She was an active member for many years until mental and physical illness made it difficult to leave home. She received 24/7 care at home, as her health continued to decline.
Edith graduated from Disputanta Training School in 1956. She then moved from Prince George to Hampton, VA. She married the love of her life, William M. King, originally from Prince George, VA, and they were residents of Hampton until his death on August 10, 1997. Edith retired from Newport News Public Schools in 1995. William retired the following year, as their plan was to move back to Prince George. Edith proceeded to move back in 1999 and remained a Prince Gorge resident until March 19, 2025. The effects of Parkinson's disease and dementia made it necessary that she relocate to Dunlop House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Colonial Heights, VA. She remained a resident until her death on August 9, 2026.
Edith leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Karen King Armstead (Marcus); grandchildren, William and Olivia Armstead; goddaughter, Heather King Lawhorn (Jason); and her longtime, dear companion and caregiver, David Taylor. She is also survived by her aunt, Maggie Payne Edwards; sisters, Helen Coleman, Sheila Pettaway (Leon) and Robin Bowman; sisters-in-law, Mildred Bowman, June Milton (Norman), Lillian Boyd (Frank) and Hazel King; brother-in-law, Herbert King (Judy); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
