Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Deacon Harvey L. Flemmings, Sr., a loving husband, devoted father, loyal brother, cherished grandfather, uncle, friend, and a faithful servant of God. Harvey peacefully transitioned from this life on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by family.

Born in Wetumpka, Alabama on February 21, 1939, to the late Mittie Marie Flemmings, Harvey was nurtured in a strong, loving family. He was further shaped by the steady guidance of his aunt and uncle, Pearl and Lee Sattiewhite, whose influence helped mold the man he became. He was the oldest of nine children and was respected, looked up to, and loved by his siblings.

Harvey lived a life marked by service, joy, and genuine connection with others. After attending Tuskegee Institute, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he faithfully served with duty stations in Korea and Germany. While stationed at Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, he met the love of his life, Helen. After a courtship rooted in respect and admiration, they were united in holy matrimony on July 19, 1965. For 60 years, he loved, protected, cherished, and provided for his beloved wife. Their union was anchored in deep affection, unwavering partnership, and steadfast faith. Together, they raised eight children, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Harvey's love for family was immeasurable; he served as a father-figure to his nieces and nephews, as well as for many of the friends of his children and grandchildren.  He was a strong pillar in the Blandford Community and modeled daily what it meant to live with integrity, humility, and purpose.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Harvey continued his life of service through his work at Hercules, Builder's Supply of Petersburg, the Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and Chesterfield County Public Schools. He retired from Chesterfield County Public Schools in 2009.  At Enon Elementary School (his last worksite), he was affectionately recognized by students —who thought he resembled Frederick Douglass—Harvey often visited classrooms during Black History Month as a guest speaker, sharing wisdom and pride in heritage.

A brick mason by trade and a builder at heart, Harvey could always be found creating, renovating, repairing, or improving something. He embodied the Scripture found in Colossians 3:23: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Harvey personified excellence in everything he touched—whether changing a lightbulb, making a copy, laying bricks, or constructing an entire home.  Known for his fierce loyalty and remarkable work ethic, it was his warm heart, humility, and ability to uplift those around him that made him truly unforgettable.

As a father, Harvey was a place of refuge—a calm, steady presence who listened without judgment and offered guidance rooted in love, wisdom, and the Bible. His attention to detail made every occasion special, whether a casual visit, birthday, graduation, or family gathering. He had a gift for speaking life, often weaving scripture and spiritual encouragement into everyday conversation. Famous for holding "family meetings," he reminded his children to be "leaders and not followers" and "to do right because it's right to do right."  He enjoyed cheering on his Pittsburgh Steelers while giving others a hard time about their team.

Above all, Harvey was a man of deep faith. He was a Trustee and faithful member at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church for many years before moving his membership to God's Mission of Faith where he served as a Deacon and Trustee. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he drew strength from his relationship with the Lord—especially during his battle with dementia. He remained anchored in Scripture, comforted by gospel music, and uplifted by anything that was positive and nourished his spirit. His faith guided his family, and because of his unwavering belief, we rejoice in knowing he is now healed, whole, and resting in eternal peace.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Helen J. Flemmings of Petersburg; his children, William Miles of Richmond, Arnette Moss (Earl) of Petersburg, Robin J. Hood of Hopewell, Regina Roberts (Johnell, Sr.) of Hope Mill, NC, Olivia Hood and Kenneth Hood (Nicole) of Petersburg, Harvey Flemmings, Jr. (Mona) of Jacksonville, FL, and Dr. Kim Evans (David Sr.) of Chester; his grandchildren, Latasha Hood, Demetria Royster, Johnell Roberts, Jr. (NaTarsha), Lavelle Hood, LaTez Jones (Tarika), Arnetta Moss, Michael Sinclair-Hood, Tremaine Roberts, Devon Hood, Keanna Hood, Dequan Hood, Kenneth Barnes, Sr., Candace Wear, Tierra Garcia, Paris Flemmings, Jasmine Flemmings, Cleon Flowers (Amy), and David Evans, Jr.; his siblings, Debra Bracy of Wetumpka, AL; Sophia Bracy Harris of Montgomery, AL; Edwin Bracy (Gloria) of Wetumpka, AL; Georgia Robinson (David) of Wetumpka, AL; John Bracy (Juanita) of Wetumpka, AL, Charles Bracy of Atlanta, GA; Katherine Moore (Lorenza) of Montgomery, AL; and Aretha Bracy of Montgomery, AL, brother in law, Danny Miles (Marie) of Charlotte, NC.  He also leaves behind a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him deeply and will forever carry his spirit in their hearts.
