Obituary

A gentle, loving champion for Christ, Anjean Beatrice Carter was born on June 19, 1941, in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Millard Tennyson Carter and Dorothy Smith Carter.  Anjean was the oldest of three girls born to this union.  On March 4, 2026 in New York City (NYC), Anjean peacefully transitioned into the eternal life at the age of 84.  Anjean left behind a legacy of love, family, and unforgettable memories.

Anjean was baptized at Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia in 1954. Anjean worshiped at Zion during her childhood years with her family.

Anjean attended Matoaca Elementary Laboratory School on the Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) campus; and Peabody High School in Petersburg, Virginia.  Afterwards, Anjean became a Howard University "Bison" in Washington, DC where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. Anjean was also inducted into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), Incorporated, at Howard.

Anjean began her working career in Washington, DC, at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare as a statistician.  After a few years in DC, Anjean set her eyes on "The Big Apple."  Anjean moved to NYC, and furthered her career with the Community Service Society of New York and the NYC Health Department.  There Anjean dedicated her career to community health policy research and advocacy.  Anjean published many notable works in the community health field (e.g., health and prenatal care access for low-income NYC residents; and community health care policy and funding).

Anjean LOVED crafts, especially quilting.  In NYC, Anjean joined the Empire Quilters Guild and Quilters of Color Network of New York. She created many beautiful quilts and showed them at exhibitions.  She especially loved making specialty quilts for her nieces and nephews.

She loved the Lord and joined the Calvary Baptist Church in NYC.  She was very active in the church; and attended the Bible Study Fellowship, a global interdenominational ministry offering structured Bible studies.

She leaves many to cherish her memory to include: two sisters, Gayle Carter Patrick of Washington, DC and Millicent Stanley Ellerbe of Fredericksburg, VA; three nieces, Tara Powell (Michael), Reneé Patrick, and Michele Long (Lewis III); one nephew, William Ellerbe, Jr. (Priscilla); four great nieces, Lela Ellerbe, Kayla Ellerbe, Tatianna Patrick, and Brianna Patrick; seven great nephews, Mandeville Powell (Kristen), Lewis Long IV, Carter Powell (Nataliia), Logan Powell, Corey Long, Amaré Long, and Brandon Patrick; two great-great nephews, Conrad and Ryland Powell; one first cousin, Charlyne Jackson-Fields; other family members; and a host of close friends, ex-coworkers, AKA Sorors, and her beloved NYC church family.

She was a wonderful big sister to Gayle and Millicent; there could be no better.  Anjean's presence in all our lives will be forever cherished and her spirit will remain with us always.

"Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.  Enter into the joy of your Master."   Matthew 25:23
