Mr. James M. Booker, Sr. affectionately known as “Jimmy Booker”, of 330 Osage Road, Petersburg, VA, was called home to be with Jesus on January 15, 2013. Jimmy was born on November 29, 1925 to the late Emmitt and Lottie C. Booker. Jimmy is married to Bertha Norman Booker, formerly of Portsmouth, Virginia. The youngest of three children, Jimmy was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Camm and his brother, Benjamin Franklin Booker (Thelma). His siblings and their spouses are Ruth LaVerne Hailstock of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Valerie Harris (William) of Chesterfield, Virginia.

Jimmy leaves to cherish his memories, one son, James Booker, Jr. (Charleen), two daughters, Brenda Bohannon, and Patricia Booker (Qaadir Hasan); five grandchildren, Amanda Miller (Antonio), Christopher Burnette, Dominique Camm, Jonathan Bohannon, and Nikkia Camm; three great grand children, Antonio, Jr., Mikah, and Kennedy Miller; one devoted cousin, Thomas Crawley (Janet); one sister-in-law, Thelma Booker of Somerset, New Jersey; eleven nieces and nephews: Frances Parham (Sam), Jacquelyne Hill, Kim Martin (Stanley), Benjamin Booker, Jr. (Andrea), Karl Booker (Cynthia), Joan Cunningham (Lester), William Pitt (Veronica), Nathaniel Pitt, Jr., Barbara Thomas, Michael Pitt (Sandra) and Janet Seward, a special niece and caretaker. Jimmy will be missed by a host of other devoted family and friends.

Jimmy was a 1943 graduate of Peabody High School and pursued a course of study in tailoring at Virginia State College. His studies were interrupted by the draft in 1944. He served at Naval stations included the Great Lakes, Corpus Cristi and bases in the Philippines. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Returning to Petersburg, Jimmy was co-partner of an upholstery shop, taught woodworking and carpentry at the Petersburg Training School and was later hired into the U. S. Post Office. He worked as a letter carrier, supervisor, substitute post master, and an EEO Counselor until he retired in 1985.

A member of Zion Baptist Church, Jimmy loved to sing. He was active in the J. B. Brown Memorial Choir, the A. J. White Male Chorus, the Male Chorus at First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, and the A. A. Johnson Masonic Male Chorus. He received the Father of the Year Honor in July of 2000.

He was a jewel of the 12th District Prince Hall Masons. He served the Eureka Lodge #15 as Master, Secretary and Treasurer, receiving his 50th year pin in 2011.

An attentive and active community member, Jimmy held positions as Chairman of the Electoral Board of Petersburg and holds a lifetime member of the NAACP.

His philosophy of life was two-fold: “Study to show yourself approved . . .” and “bring up a child in the way he should go . . .”

A funeral service for Mr. James M. Booker, Sr. will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Byrne Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Archie German, Interim Pastor, Officiating and Rev Dr. Andrew J. White, Sr., Pastor Emeritus, Eulogist. Interment to follow in Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, January 18, 2013 at the funeral establishment.
