Life Legacy

Mr. Lewis Wilson Mason, Sr. of Macon, Georgia, peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, January 10, 2013 (a few hours before his 75th birthday) at his residence.

Lewis was born January 11, 1938 in Disputanta, Virginia, to the late Robert Lane Mason, Sr. and Virginia Goodwyn-Mason. Lewis was educated at the then, Disputanta Training School. He retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation in 1999 after 30 years of employment, and was employed at the Department of Education and Transportation, Bibb County, Georgia (2001-2012), until his health declined. Prior employments included, Firestone Tire Company in Hopewell, Virginia, and a part-time bus driver for Petersburg City Public Schools.

He was a faithful member of Bethel CME Church of Macon, Georgia, where he served as a Church Steward, joyful greeter of the Usher Board, and was an active Sunday School scholar. Lewis accepted Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church of Disputanta and later joined Holy Family and St. Joseph Catholic Churches of Petersburg.

Lewis was an avid sportsman who loved jogging, reading and giving back to his community. He coached his children’s Little League baseball teams in Petersburg, Macon, and the West Petersburg Bravettes Softball Team; he played for the Disputanta All-Stars and the West Petersburg Braves Baseball Teams, and various other softball teams. He was also chief umpire of the Independent Semi-Pro Baseball League in the Virginia area until 1981.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lewis W. “Bug” Mason, Jr. and four brothers, Robert Jr., Earl, Percy and William Mason.

Lewis leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Janie B. Mason of Macon, GA; three daughters, Ronda Mason (Rudy) of Lanham, MD, Rosalind Hollemon of Petersburg, VA and Tonya Owens (Daniel) of Macon, GA; two sons, Ronale Mason, Sr. of Petersburg, VA and Antuane “Beave” Mason (Ivory) of Lithonia, GA; eleven grandchildren, Shamika Underwood, Tiara Jordan, Jamaal Clark, Chaz Brown, Jazmine Hollemon, Ronale Mason, Jr., Darius “Dre” Bradford, Janae Hollemon, Kiara Owens, Ashton Mason and Sierra Owens; two great-grandsons, Tyson Carroll and Ayden Wyatt; three brothers, Wilbert Goodwyn, Sr. of Disputanta, VA, Richard Mason, Sr. (Caroline) of Williamsburg, VA and Raymond “Leroy” Mason of Petersburg, VA; one motherly aunt, Viola Goodwyn of Waverly, VA; sisters-in-law, Margaret Mason and Louise Burrow of Petersburg, VA, Mary Mason of Martinsville, VA, Annie Mae Granderson (Joseph) of Petersburg, VA, Geraldine Flowers (Shelton) of Stony Creek, VA; one brother-in-law, Elwood Burrow (Leila) of Petersburg, VA and a host of nieces, nephews (devoted, Joey Granderson); cousins, (sisterly, Lucile Turner), and friends; special friends are Milton and Modestine Ivery, Sr. and family, June Pryor, John and Mildred Hobbs, and Albert and Gretta Maynard and family.

Lewis will be missed by all who loved him.

A funeral service for Mr. Lewis Wilson Mason, Sr. will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., Pastor, and Pastor Carlton Mahone, Eulogist. The interment will to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
